As a train conductor you work as a member of a train crew that helps switch cars, make or split trains in yards, or move cars between yards, sidings or tracks;
Position Responsibilities:
- Work in train or yard service depending on their seniority;
- Execute specific instructions describing train route and specific movements;
- Perform switching of cars including coupling and uncoupling of cars and can pull out coupling device;
- observing, interpreting and transmitting signals and other instructions affecting train movement;
- signal personnel, when to start, stop, back up, set or release air brakes for engine or train movement using specified signals or radio;
- Provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in case of emergency, as prescribed in operating rules;
- Switch on and off movable or fixed equipment while the train is switching industrial, station or yard;
- drive a moving car by hanging on irons or a ladder, sometimes for long periods of time;
- Fill out forms including train orders and switch lists and prepare clear and legible reports as required;
- Irregular working hours including holidays, weekends, days and nights and time periods up to 12 hours;
- Must be constantly alert to changing conditions and events and take safe and responsible action as necessary.
Position Requirements:
- High school graduation or General Equivalency Diploma (GED);
- 3 to 5 years of work experience with a demonstrated safe work record;
- Valid Full/Graduate Drivers required with no restrictions;
- Must be at least 18 years of age;
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude;
- Must be able to work with minimal supervision;
- Ability to act and/or make decisions that affect the safety/welfare of others, i.e. warn others of unsafe conditions;
- Must have good spatial ability with respect to layout and sense of space, with the ability to judge the speed and/or distance of moving objects;
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
- Good interpersonal skills with the ability to work as a collaborative member of a team;
- Must be willing to work weekends and shifts – 24 hours/day on call, with 2 hours notice based on location, (excluding annual leave);
- May require more time to work away from home;
- Must pass required examinations, read and understand safety instructions, rule books, instructions and regulations, timetables, bulletins, waybills, placards and other written or printed materials;
- Must be willing to work in adverse weather conditions;
- May be required to lift up to 80 lbs.
- Must be able to cross the United States border for work purposes;
- Must be able to obtain a passport.
