position Responsibilities:
Duties for this position may include but are not limited to:
- Our Communications Unit offers 24/7 emergency response services.
- Providing superior customer service to members of the community in emergent and non-emergent capacities.
- Prioritizing calls for service by obtaining accurate information through questioning techniques, ensuring the safety of the caller, the public and our officers.
- Ensuring the safety of community members and officers by establishing York Regional Police policies.
- Generating calls for services using the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system and various police databases and directing officers for call response in a fast-paced work environment.
- Directs callers to appropriate resources, liaises with neighborhood police, EMS and fire services.
- Determine operational requirements for responding officers and provide appropriate direction for call response.
- Tracking officer location and status, ensuring the most efficient response time.
- Monitor radio frequencies and dispatch calls for service as assigned.
- Constant distractions and high levels of activity, noise and lack of privacy.
- Exposure to high stress, rotating work schedule and prolonged sitting, talking, keyboarding, radio broadcasts and telephone calls
Mandatory Qualifications:
- Successful completion of one (1) year Certificate in Telecommunications or two (2) years Diploma in related field.
- Alternatively, prior experience working in a primary public safety answering point (PSAP) center may be considered.
- A minimum of two (2) years of relevant customer service experience.
priority Qualifications:
- A completed Emergency Response Communication program/certificate is preferred.
- Large volume switchboard and emergency service experience preferred.
- General knowledge of York Region road systems and ability to interpret maps.
- Ability to operate a computer-aided dispatch system and various related interface systems.
- Emergency system processes, organization structure and hierarchy, communication procedures are an asset.
- Solid organizational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Abilities to deal tactfully with others in high pressure environments.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a cohesive team environment
- Demonstrated problem solving and decision making abilities.
- Ability to multi-task, adjust priorities and work in a fast-paced and demanding environment.
