Job Summary
A permanent machine operator is responsible for operating and servicing all eligible work equipment machines in the assigned territory. Although track employees generally perform the duties of inspecting, repairing and replacing rails, ties, switches and ballasts, the person in charge performs other duties as required.

Training
After recruitment, attend formal and on-the-job training. This position requires successful completion of a training program to work as a permanent machine operator.
This position is a joint position. Also, pay and benefits are governed by the applicable collective agreement.
Main Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment on and off-track to support track repair and maintenance activities;
- Remove and replace defective ties, rail spikes and anchors
- Correct deviations in track surface, alignment and gauge
- Install and repair street and railroad crossings
- Distribute track material
- Clear brush, vegetation, snow and debris from the railroad right-of-way
- Establish and maintain drainage
- Inspect and maintain heavy equipment
- Perform other duties as assigned when work does not require machine operation, including track inspection and other track maintenance duties
- The track must comply with safety standards, operating rules and safe work practices
working conditions
- Must be available to work shift work and occasional overtime
- The role may be required to work outside of the assigned headquarters location from time to time
- Ability to perform physical work outdoors in a variety of weather and environmental conditions
- Must be able to perform repetitive physical activities during shift
- Must be able to occasionally lift and carry between 50 lbs (22 kg) and up to 70 lbs (32 kg)
- Must be able to supply basic personal tools for equipment maintenance
- The incumbent is located outside the headquarters (name of locations) and starts work at this location
- The role may occasionally require reporting to another location or working away from home
- When required to work away from headquarters, the incumbent shall be compensated for travel and other expenses as per the collective agreement.
- Must have good eye-hand coordination and grasping ability
Employment requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED)
- A valid driver’s license
- Collaborates with others and shares information
- Demonstrates active listening
- Relevant work experience in a similar work environment*
- Post Secondary Trade Education*
- Experience or training in Mechanical*
- Knowledge of signals or train handling rules*
- Any experience/education/skills/knowledge related to the above will be considered an asset
